Two Milwaukee-based real estate development firms, Maures Development Group LLC and J. Jeffers & Co., are partnering on a redevelopment project for the former Garfield School site in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville district.
They plan to create a mixed-use development that will include a new home for America’s Black Holocaust Museum, 71 apartments, commercial space and open spaces.
The project will consist of a redevelopment of the former school building into 30 apartments and a new, four-story, mixed-use building with 41 apartments, commercial space, the museum and community space. The gym space in the former school building will be used for arts, cultural and community events.
In addition to the former school at 2215 N. 4th St., originally built in 1887 and later expanded, the project site includes the adjacent Grants restaurant building at 411 W. North Ave., the former America’s Black Holocaust Museum at 2235 N. 4th St. and vacant parcels at 2226-34 N. 5th St. The size of the entire project site is about 2.3 acres.
Milwaukee Public Schools and the City of Milwaukee’s Redevelopment Authority issued an RFP for development proposals for the site, and Maures was selected as the winning bidder.

The project will be reviewed at the City Plan Commission’s Oct. 17 meeting.
