Orthopaedic surgeon, Marquette Alum, receives humanitarian award

Dr. Wendelin Schaefer, was recently honored with the Medical College of Wisconsin/Marquette Medical Alumni Association’s Humanitarian Award for his medical missions to serve the people of Ecuador, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania.

Dr. Schaefer spent most of his career in private practice with Sheboygan Orthopaedic Associates from 1974-80 and Lakeland Orthopaedics from 1980-2000. He founded a program within Orthopaedics Overseas in Sheboygan, to assist the Bugunda Medical Center (BMC) in Mwanza, Tanzania in 1993, and continued as program director until 2005. 

During the last 20 years, along with the work in Tanzania, he has joined medical missions to Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa and Kenya. 

In recent years he has served as his Rotary Club’s Chairman for International Services.
