Optimist Theatre to offer free Shakespeare performances

Optimist Theatre will take the stage at the Selig-Joseph-Folz Amphitheatre this weekend with free performances of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”

The Shakespeare in the Park performances, open to the public, will run Friday, July 12, through Sunday, July 14, beginning at 8 p.m. each of the three nights.

Optimist Theatre plans to duplicate its production of “As You Like It” next week from Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21.

The Shakespeare play traces the life of main character Rosaline as she escapes persecution in her uncle’s court alongside her cousin Celia and Touchstone the court jester. The three take refuge in the Forest of Arden.

Each performance, presented by BMO Harris Bank with support from the Milwaukee Arts Board, will seat between 150 and 170 people in terraced seating. Additional grass seating will also be available for viewers, and all seating is first come, first served.

Seating will open at 7 p.m., and the play will last about two hours with a 15 minute intermission.

Reservations and tickets are not required.

The Selig-Joseph-Folz Amphitheatre is located at Alice Bertschy Kadish Park, 308 E. Lloyd St. in Milwaukee.
