Plans to convert former department store to new library branch move forward

Gorman & Company is moving forward with plans to renovate the former Hills Department Store, 906-910 W. Historic Mitchell Street, into a new Milwaukee Public Library branch. The branch will include first floor commercial space and a mezzanine.  According to documents filed with the city of Milwaukee, Gorman & Co. is anticipating a fitness center to fill the commercial space, the library on the first floor and residential units on floors two through five. The Historic Preservation Commission will consider a Certificate of Appropriateness for building renovation Feb. 8.

Mixed-use development planned for Brookfield Road

Brayton Management Company Inc. is planning to renovate an existing office building and build a 24-unit apartment building at 655 N. Brookfield Road in the Town of Brookfield.

William Bode, owner of Brookfield-based Brayton Management, said the $4.5 million project will include one- and two-bedroom market-rate apartments that will be ready for lease in summer 2017.

The existing building on the site will be renovated to match the materials of the apartment building and additional commercial space will be added, Bode said.
