Today was set to be the last day to sign up on HealthCare.gov in order to get coverage that starts on Jan. 1, but that deadline has been extended one more day.
The Washington Post has reported today that Obama administration officials have changed the rules so that people will have an extra day to enroll, making the final deadline to sign up for Jan. 1 coverage 11:59 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
In Wisconsin, and in 26 other states with federally-facilitated health care marketplaces, consumers are required to select plans by midnight tonight.
Some states with state-based marketplaces have extended their enrollment deadlines. Minnesota has extended the deadline to enroll on its MNsure website to Dec. 31.
Dan Schwartzer, deputy commissioner of the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, said roughly 8,000 people in Wisconsin have signed up for coverage on the exchange, but that less than half of those people have made payments.
The deadline for making the first month’s premium payment for marketplace coverage was recently moved from Dec. 31 to Jan. 10, due to ongoing technical issues with HealthCare.gov, health insurer industry trade group America’s Health insurance Providers (AHIP) announced last week.
