With the filing deadline now passed, the race for Oak Creek mayor is officially between three candidates.
Aldermen Tom Michalski and Steve Scaffidi as well as former alderman and current School Board member Mark Verhalen will vie for the position. Those three will be on the ballot in the Feb. 21 primary, with the top two vote-getters facing off in the general election April 3.
5 p.m. today was the deadline for candidates to submit the necessary paperwork to get on the ballot.
Michalski, 58, was first elected to the Common Council in 2006. He has also filed to run for re-election for his aldermanic seat, which he would give up if elected mayor.
Scaffidi, 53, has been on the Common Council since 2009. He was acting mayor for about 10 days following the death of Dick Bolender (The Oak Creek Common Council later appointed Al Foeckler to serve through the April elections).
Verhalen, 55, is in his fourth attempt to become Oak Creek mayor.
The Oak Creek mayor is elected to a three-year term and paid $18,100 per year.
