Notable Health Care Leaders: Mary Haynor

Class of 2023

Mary Haynor

Mary Haynor began her career in 1975 as a public health nurse for the City of Milwaukee Health Department, and in 1999, she assumed the top leadership role at Milwaukee-based Horizon Home Care & Hospice.

Over the past 48 years, she has established herself as a leader in home care and hospice, said Marcy Stutzman, Horizon’s director of development. Haynor is set to retire early next year.

“In her first two years (as president and CEO), she led the agency out of debt and molded it into a top financial performer, ranking in the top 10% of home-health agencies nationwide,” Stutzman said.

Among her many accomplishments, Haynor established Horizon’s Grief Resource Center in 2009, the only center of its kind in the state of Wisconsin to provide free grief counseling services to the community, and in 2010, she developed and opened the Lawlis Family Hospice, an inpatient hospice unit in Mequon. She followed that up in 2016 by acquiring Horizon’s second inpatient hospice unit, the Kathy Hospice in West Bend.

“But perhaps her proudest accomplishment is how she has nurtured those on her staff. When Mary retires in January 2024, her successor will be a woman who has been mentored by Mary for over 30 years,” said Stutzman.
