Boys and Girls Club select new youth of the year
Cavalier Washington, of Milwaukee, was recently selected as the 2011 Northwestern Mutual Foundation Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee).
Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. It is the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can receive.
Cavalier was selected among several local youth, she will go on to compete against other Boys and Girls Club members in March for the Wisconsin  Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship.
Additional scholarship opportunities and regional and national competitions will follow.
 “Our youth members are amazing individuals and the caliber of our Northwestern Mutual Foundation Youth of the Year is no exception,” said James Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “Young people like Cavalier are able to flourish and thrive thanks to our caring staff who instill in them the attitudes, skills, values and behaviors to succeed in life. We wish her much success at the Wisconsin Youth of the Year competition.”
Washington grew up watching her mother work two jobs to chare for her and her three siblings. Her father left when she was young. After the recession hit, Cavalier was forced to move in with an aunt to help with finances. She is a member at the Daniels-Mardak Boys & Girls Club.
“The Club is a place where I come to get away from all my problems going on at home and at school,” Washington said. “This is a place where I can come to talk, not to feel embarrassed, but to be understood.”
Washington tutors other club members during Power Hour and also participates in the Club’s Keystone Club dedicated to community service, and the Clubs’ volleyball and soccer teams. She is a senior at Holy Redeemer Academy, a member of the varsity cheerleading and dance squads. She maintained a 3.0 GPA and hopes to attend Marquette Unviersity.
“We’re dedicated to helping kids achieve their full potential through high-impact programs such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s Youth of the Year program. It reflects the talents, abilities and aspirations of future leaders like Cavalier Washington,” said Gary A. (Skip) Poliner, Northwestern Mutual president and chief risk officer and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee board member. “This recognition builds a strong foundation for her future.”

Ronald McDonald House names new board members
Ronald McDonald House charity, Wauwatosa, has added three new members to its board of directors. They include: Mary Kay Mark, senior vice president of Northern Trust Bank; Christopher Daniels, vice president of human resources at Sensient Technologies Corporation and Mark Ship, vice president of access and referral services at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

State Fair Park Foundation adds new board members
Wisconsin State Fair Park Foundation Board has added two board members to the organization. They include: Dan Elias of Express Promotions and John Lavin of The Lavin Group.  
“Dan Elias is well known in the event industry, providing the popular event logo merchandise to both Wisconsin State Fair and Summerfest, and we are looking forward to being able to tap into his promotional expertise,” said Doak Geiger, chair of the Foundation’s board development committee. “John Lavin is also no stranger to Wisconsin State Fair or the Foundation. The Lavin Group managed the Budweiser Pavilion at the Fair for many years and John was instrumental in the development of the Wisconsin State Fair Park Foundation.”

March of Dimes names chair of annual fundraiser

Dr. Julian E. De Lia, medical director of the International Institute for the Treatment of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome at Wheaton Franciscan –St. Joseph, has been designated the 2011 Milwaukee March for Babies chair in the March of Dimes biggest fundraiser of the year, March for Babies.  He received his undergraduate and doctor of medicine degrees from New Jersey College of Medicine, and completed his residency at St. Barnabas in Livingston, New Jersey. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and American College of Surgeons.
Dr. De Lia received the Wisconsin March of Dimes Saving Babies, Together Leadership Award for Prevention in 2006. He also received the Pacesetter Award from Cornell’s New York Hospital Queens for his pioneering work with intrauterine placental laser surgery to treat TTTS.
