Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee accepts award nomination
Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Commitnment to Justice Awards. For the past 22 years, Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee has honored outstanding humanitarian leaders who have made notable contributions to build a more just, caring and healthy community for people and animals.
The awards include:
- Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award – Social Justice Category
Nominees have contributed to social justice and improved quality of life in Greater Milwaukee over a period of 10 years or more. - Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award – Animal Welfare Category
Nominees have contributed to improved quality of life for animals in Greater Milwaukee over a period of 10 years or more. - Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award – Environment Category
Nominees have contributed to improved environmental quality in Greater Milwaukee over a period of 10 years or more. - Future of Change Award
Nominees are under the age of 30 and have demonstrated initiative and leadership in a significant action that contributed to justice, equality, or in some other way significantly improved quality of life for others in Greater Milwaukee. - A. David Schwartz Business Humanitarian Award
Nominees have used his or her position in a for-profit business in Greater Milwaukee as a means of improving social justice or the environment locally. - President’s Award
Nominees for this award is an employee or a volunteer with a Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee member organization who has made significant contributions to the advancement of social or environmental justice in Greater Milwaukee.

City receives United Health grant
The City of Milwaukee was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from United Health Foundation to support its "Cribs for Kids" Initiative. The grant will help to provide local families with Pack ‘n Plays to help reduce deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and unsafe sleep. Pack ‘n Plays are provided to families who are unable to purchase one and who are in their last four weeks of pregnancy or who have an infant under six months of age.
“United Health Foundation is impressed by the results of the Milwaukee Health Departments’ efforts to reduce the infant mortality rate in Milwaukee, especially the Cribs for Kids program,” said Kate Rubin, president of United Health Foundation. “This initiative is raising awareness about safe sleep practices and giving families the tools they need to create a safe environment for their children. And that is literally saving lives.”
To participate in the Cribs for Kids program in Milwaukee, a Medicaid-eligible parent can make an appointment at any one of the three Milwaukee Health Department Safe Sleep Clinics located throughout the city. To contact MHD’s Cribs for Kids Program by phone, call 414-286-8620.
Art Museum offers free admission on March 1
The Milwaukee Art Museum will host its Target Free First Thursday on Thursday, March 1. Admission is free for all individuals, and it is the public’s first opportunity to see Accidental Genius for free.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to our visitors,” said Daniel Keegan, Museum director. “Since the program started, over 30,000 people have participated in Target Free First Thursdays. The Museum has three outstanding exhibitions running at the moment, and I encourage everyone to experience them.”
Also included on March 1 is a film screening of “In the Realms of the Unreal,” which examines the life of Chicago artist Henry Darger. One of Darger’s works is included in the Accidental Genius exhibition. The film begins at 6:15 p.m. in Lubar Auditorium and is free.
Target Free First Thursdays provides all Museum visitors with free admission on the first Thursday of each month. The Museum is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Future Target Free First Thursday dates include April 5 and May 3, 2012.
Local school selected in Shopko choose a charity contest
St. Marcus School in Milwaukee has been selected as one of five organizations in Green Bay-based Shopko Corp Choose a Charity contest. The winner will receive a $10,000 donation from the Shopko Foundation.
"Shopko views each community where we have operations as our ‘hometown’ and we are thankful for the opportunity to do business in these communities," said Paul Jones, president and chief executive officer of Shopko. "The mission of the Shopko Foundation is to support the well-being of Shopko communities and the ‘Choose the Charity’ contest is an exciting way for our Facebook fans to be involved in our charitable giving."
The contest, which allows Facebook fans to vote for one of the five organizations, is an effort to strengthen the communities it serves, Jones said.
The "Choose the Charity" contest runs from now until Monday, March 12. Facebook fans can visit www.facebook.com/shopko to learn about each organization and vote for the group that they would like to receive the donation. The top vote-getter will receive the $10,000 donation from the Shopko Foundation and the winner will be announced on March 13.
In addition to St. Marcus School, the groups chosen to participate in the contest are: The Hope House of Green Bay, The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery of Spokane, Wash., The Children’s Center of Salt Lake City, Utah, and One World Community Health Centers in Omaha, Neb.
The organizations were selected based on the high quality of services that they provide, the strong support that they enjoy in their communities and their track records of proven results..
