*Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26, U.S. Bank in Milwaukee will host free shredding events as part of National Protect Your Identity Week. Anything made of paper will be shredded during the event to help protect individuals and consumers against identity theft. Along with documents, participants are encouraged to bring files (without removing fasteners, clips and rubber bands) as well as soft and hard covered books. Participants are limited to 10 boxes worth of shredding materials. A shredding event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the U.S. Bank branch located at 4015 S. Howell Ave. in Milwaukee. A second shredding event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the bank’s branch located at 5220 W. North Ave. in Milwaukee.
*Saturday, Oct. 26, the public is invited to take part in City Year Milwaukee’s Make a Difference Day service project, which will update Gwen T. Jackson School with murals, quotes, small construction projects and landscaping. At least 100 community volunteers will contribute to the project along with 73 City Year Milwaukee corps members. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome program and 9 a.m. and the service running from 9:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Volunteers will receive bagels in the morning and lunch onsite. Gwen T. *Saturday, Oct. 26, College Possible Milwaukee will hold a book drive for its annual Make a Difference Day. Participating students and volunteers will “trick-or-treat” for books to be donated to Marquette University’s Hartman Literacy and Learning Center, which offers literacy support services for area elementary school students. The drive will collect new and gently used children’s books for kids between ages 5 and 10. Students and volunteers will walk door-to-door in select neighborhoods from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. to collect books. Book donations can also be dropped off at select bookstores and other locations. *Saturday, Oct. 26, Historic Milwaukee Inc. will kick off a series of Skywaukee Tours through downtown Milwaukee’s skywalk network. The tours will showcase Milwaukee architecture from the vantage points of the skywalks and will also include facts about Milwaukee’s early history. The tours run every Saturday through Dec. 14. and begin at 1 p.m. at the Shops of Grand Avenue, located at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Milwaukee. Tours are free for Historic Milwaukee members and for children under age 6. Cost for nonmembers is $10. Children ages 7 to 17 can gain admission for $2. *Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee will hold a workshop on “Getting Started with Grant Writing.” The workshop, which will best serve individuals without previous grant writing experience, will cover critical steps of grant writing using the Wisconsin Common Grant Application. The workshop will also help attendees learn how to research grant writing resources and opportunities. Joyce Mallory, nonprofit consultant of Mallory & Associates, will lead the workshop from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee, located at 2819 W. Highland Blvd. in Milwaukee. *Friday, Nov. 8, ArtWorks for Milwaukee will hold its annual benefit to raise funds for its 2014 internship program, which pays teenage interns who are facing barriers to employment to complete an art project and teaches them soft work skills along the way. The event, themed “Night by the River,” will include hors d’oeuvres as well as samples of craft beer, fine wines and cocktails. It will also feature live and silent auctions with donated items and services from area businesses along with original artwork from program interns. Event organizers hope to draw at least 400 people to the fundraiser. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the City Center at 735, located at 735 N. Water St. in Milwaukee. *Saturday, Nov. 9, Guitars for Vets (G4V) in partnership with the Harley Davidson Museum will hold a benefit concert titled “Rock The Rumble” to raise funds for G4V as well as awareness around its nonprofit mission to provide free guitars and music lessons to military veterans. The event will run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Harley Davidson Rumble Room, located at the museum at 400 W. Canal St. in Milwaukee.
