  • Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 9, Growing Power will host an Urban and Small Farm Conference to discuss ways to plan and produce small farms in urban and rural settings. The conference will feature breakaway sessions, speakers and farm tours as well as input from leading farmers, chefs, urban planners, biologists and policymakers. Organizers expect 3,000 participants. The conference will be stationed at the Wisconsin State Fair Park, 640 S. 84th Street in West Allis.   • Friday, Sept. 7, the 6th annual Life Lights Candlelit Stroll will be held at the Milwaukee County Zoo, 10001 W. Bluemound Road beginning at 5:30 p.m. Organized by Horizon Home Care & Hospice, the memorial event will offer attendees a place to grieve the loss of loved ones. The evening will feature a 1-mile sunset stroll lit with luminaries, a candle lighting ceremony and a memorial slideshow. Participants may submit photos of loved ones and pets for the slideshow. The memorial will also include a moment of silence in honor of those who died at the Aug. 5 Sikh Temple shooting. Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for kids up to age 10. (Advance tickets run $20 for adults and $10 for kids through today.) Tickets cover parking and admission, live music, and a Friday Fish Fry or a kid’s meal.   • Saturday, Sept. 8, Good Harvest Market, 1850 Meadow Lane in Pewaukee, will host a Harvest Health Fair from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The 8th annual fair will include healthy living classes, an organic cookout and a 30K run benefitting nonprofit NuGenesis Farm. NuGenesis focuses on sustainable organic agriculture and research of food as medicine. The run starts at 7:30 a.m. at West Wood Health & Fitness, 2900 Golf Road in Pewaukee, and costs $45.   • Saturday, Sept. 8, Milwaukee 4 Recovery will host its fourth annual Milwaukee Walk for Recovery in celebration of September as National Recovery Month. The walk begins at the Milwaukee Alano Club, 1521 N. Prospect Avenue in Milwaukee. Onsite registration runs from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a speaker, the walk and a block party.   • Thursday, Sept. 13, the Schlitz Park 5K Challenge & Packer Party will take place at Schlitz Park, 1555 N. RiverCenter Dr. in Milwaukee to kick off Milwaukee River Challenge weekend. The race, which will include a 5K course and a 1-mile course geared toward families, will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony for the top runners following. T-shirts will be available for purchase. Cost to participate in the race is $30, and all proceeds will be donated to Milwaukee Riverkeeper. Participants may register online through Friday, Sept. 7, or at the race beginning at 3:30 p.m. Space is limited. A Packers vs. Bears tailgate and viewing party with free food and drink for racers will continue the race day celebration.   • Saturday, Sept 15, the 35th annual Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk will take place in downtown Milwaukee. The 8k for runners kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Wheelchair participants will start the course at 10:15 a.m. and walkers will follow the runners with an option of a 3- or 5-mile route. All start at 12th Street and Wisconsin Avenue at Marquette University. Cost is $30 for runners and wheelchair racers, $25 for walkers, $15 for child runners up to age 12, and $10 for child walkers. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Each participant will receive an event t-shirt and is welcome at a finish line celebration at the Henry Maier Festival Park, 200 N.   • Saturday, Sept. 15, Marcus Theatres will host a special showing of Finding Nemo as part of its “Reel Movies for Real Needs” series, which caters toward special-needs children and their families. The movie, presented in 2D, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Marcus Theatres including North Shore Cinema in Mequon and South Shore Cinema in Oak Creek. Cost is standard matinee prices for children and adults. The film series is sponsored by Variety – The Children’s Charity of Wisconsin and Best Buddies Wisconsin.   • Saturday, Sept. 15, Rock the Green’s second annual music festival will offer music lovers a concert featuring artists like Third Eye Blind, Metric, Switchfoot, Imagine Dragons, Atlas Genius, and Morning Parade. The festival will also focus on sustainability efforts and will take measures like recycling, composting, using paperless tickets and using LED lighting to ensure near-zero waste. The concert will take place at Veteran’s Park in Milwaukee from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. General admission tickets can be purchased online for $30 or at the gate for $40.   • Friday, Sept. 21, Meta House, Inc. will host a Meta Moments lunch and discussion focused on “Prevention Works, Treatment is Effective, People Recover.” Scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. at Meta House Residential Facility, 2626 N. Bremen Street in Milwaukee, the lunch will honor September as National Recovery Month and will feature two Meta House graduates and a clinical staff member who will share their stories and perspectives on substance abuse.
