New southwest side Walmart store opens

A new 39,900-sqaure-foot Walmart Market store opened today at the intersection of West Main and South 70th streets on the southwest side of the city of Milwaukee.

Walmart Market stores are smaller stores with grocery, pharmacy and some general merchandise items. The pharmacy has a drive-up lane. This is the first Walmart Market store to open in the city of Milwaukee.

“Walmart worked with city government to adapt the design of this new store to better fit the neighborhood,” Mayor Tom Barrett said.  “This is a significant new development at a site that had been underutilized for years.”

The store has about 90 employees. It is one of several stores that Walmart is building, or plans to build, in the Milwaukee area.
