Following a successful $30,000 campaign, the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance will heighten awareness of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home National Historic Landmark District with new public signage.
The MPA plans to purchase and install landmark guide signage along Interstate Highway 94 as well as interpretive language along the Hank Aaron State Trail to draw attention to the Solders Home Historic District.
The MPA raised $30,000 for signage through the Wayfinding and Awareness Campaign, which met its target thanks to individual donations and a $5,000 matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
“The Soldiers Home Historic District is one of the most important historic landmarks in the entire region, and this signage will greatly impact awareness and appreciation of this cultural asset,” said Dawn McCarthy, president of the MPA board of directors. “The Milwaukee Preservation Alliance would not have been able to achieve our goal without the generous support of the many individuals and groups who care deeply about the Soldiers Home. These contributions show that our community values highly the Milwaukee Soldiers Home Historic District.”
The Wayfinding and Awareness Campaign launched last summer with the rollout of a free self-guided walking tour smartphone app. The app, funded by the David and Julia Uihlein Foundation, educates Solders Home visitors through historical narration, historic facts and historical photos.
The MPA expects to install the new I-94 signage by this fall and erect signage along the Hank Aaron State Trail by next spring.
