New Berlin firm develops new lock for boating electronics

DuraSafe Locks, a New Berlin manufacturer of locks for recreational vehicles, recently introduced a new line of locks to secure fishing-related electronics such as fish finders, GPS systems, chart plotters and VHF radios.

The new lock, named the Universal Electronics Lock (UEL) retails for $19.99 and fits most brands of fishing and boating-related electronics, said Cathy Kraatz, the company’s marketing director.

"We’re trying to stop impulse theft," she said. "A fish finder can cost $800 to $2,000."

The UEL replaces a knob that typically attaches an electronic device to a boat’s dashboard. Because most manufacturers use different sizes of screws with different thread styles, it took DuraSafe mote than one year to develop the new product, Kraatz said.

"Because there are several brands on the market, all with different kinds of sizes, it was a challenge to create a fit chart," she said. "It took a lot of research."

Aside from the UEL, DuraSafe makes several other products for the marine market, including the T-Rex Transom Saver with Prop Lock and locks for both outboard and trolling motors. The company’s marine-related products are sold in stores such as Gander Mountain, Cabela’s, West Marine, Bass Pro Shops, Boater’s World and Mel’s Marine. The lock is also available through www.durasafelocks.com.
