The Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) recently opened its L.I.F.E. Academy, a support services branch of the center, dedicated to assisting young adults with disabilities in developing independent living skills.
"It’s difficult for any young adult to transition from high school into adulthood, but it’s especially hard for teens and young adults with disabilities because of their unique set of challenges and oftentimes limited support services," said Nancy Pickett, Director of MCFI L.I.F.E. Services. "MCFI’s L.I.F.E. Academy fills a vital gap in services for these Southeastern Wisconsin residents – and their families – through personalized programs that address their needs. The goal is to make transitions as seamless as possible."
The L.I.F.E. Academy will be located at the Holy Trinity Church, 11709 W. Cleveland Ave., in West Allis. The service will offer a 12-week series of highly individualized plans that will cover topics like developing interpersonal and daily living skills, safety, career development and networking, support services for occupational, physical and speech therapy and post program assistance for continued growth. The plans will help promote life-long learning, empowerment, self-determination and economic security, Pickett said.
The Academy will also form partnerships with local school districts and community organization to insure uninterrupted access to transition services.
