GOP gubernatorial hopeful Mark Neumann wants to create a series of research triangles around Wisconsin that he says would utilize the state’s universities and create 300,000 jobs by 2020.
Neumann said the development of the parks would stop the brain drain from Wisconsin, adding he was inspired by the success of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill research triangle park in North Carolina.
"We’re hoping to combine the intellectual brainpower we have here on our college campuses with the specific needs of businesses here in America and around the world to provide for a synergy that will bring jobs to Wisconsin," Neumann said.
Neumann said he would create an economic development team to help match up the resources of state universities with needs of businesses, and he would offer businesses tax incentives to create jobs.
Neumann mocked GOP rival Scott Walker earlier this year when the county executive promised to create 250,000 jobs during his first term as guv. Asked about Neumann’s proposal, Walker said he is focused on his own jobs goal.
"We need jobs now. We need them in the first term," Walker said.
