MSI General Corp.

When Craig Coursin took over as president of MSI General Corp., a building design and construction management firm, the company already had a well-established name in the industry and decades of experience. Coursin wanted to make sure it stayed on that path.

“I wanted to grow the company at a steady pace while keeping in place the high standards of design and the very good corporate culture,” he said.

While the company did maintain many of the traditions that it had built its reputation upon, Coursin has continually added new programs and certifications to keep the company growing.

For example, MSI General has been designing high-performance, green buildings for over 10 years and recently got LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. They set a goal to have 24 LEED accredited buildings and are at 13 after 18 months.

“We also looked internally when we started with the LEED certification, and now we’re making improvements there to lead by example. To start, we’ve been tracking the waste that comes off our job sites and now we have an 80 percent recycle rate that far surpasses our goal of 50 percent,” said Coursin.

In addition, MSI General recently renovated the back of its building to create one large office space for both the architects and engineers. The room, which uses green materials, has offices on the perimeter and a general meeting space in the middle. According to Coursin, the atmosphere encourages collaboration and team thinking to keep ideas fresh for the growing company.
