The Hop, the new downtown Milwaukee streetcar, provided more than 76,000 rides during December, the city reported today.
December ridership totaled 76,044, for an average of 2,453 per day. The best day of ridership during the month was Saturday, Dec. 15, with 4,882 rides provided.
November ridership totaled 76,125, including 16,409 on the streetcar’s opening weekend of Nov. 2-4, an average of 2,625 per day. Excluding the opening weekend ridership on The Hop, November ridership averaged 2,297 per day.
Early week ridership on The Hop improved in December. Excluding holidays, Monday ridership was 1,789 per Monday, up from 1,357 in November, and Tuesday ridership was 1,952 per Tuesday, up from 1,622 in November.
“Our ridership numbers show that the city is embracing this new asset, and that people are riding for a wide variety of reasons,” Mayor Tom Barrett said. “We’ve seen some fantastic crowds on weekends as the streetcar attracts business and activity downtown, and we’re also seeing an uptick during the week as more and more riders utilize the system to connect with their jobs, residences and other destinations. The early returns on The Hop have been very encouraging, and we look forward to seeing continued ridership in the year ahead.”
