The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce has been trying to get one of its members to be represented on the Milwaukee Area Technical College’s board of directors, but to no avail.
Until now. Michael Katz, owner and president of Molded Dimensions, an MMAC member in Port Washington, has been elected to the MATC board.
The MMAC has consistently lobbied for the need for business representation on the MATC board, especially in the area of manufacturing, where Milwaukee ranks as one of the top two manufacturing centers in the nation.
The MMAC said it strongly endorsed Katz because he has experience in manufacturing and understands the skill sets and training that employers need to stay competitive. He has owned Molded Dimensions for more than eight years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Steve Baas, director of governmental affairs for the MMAC, said, “Manufacturing is the single most important sector of our regional economy. If our technical college system is to be a true partner in providing the workforce we need it must have leadership that understands manufacturing first-hand. That’s why it was such a high priority for MMAC to get a manufacturer on the MATC board. MATC cannot respond to needs it does not know exist or does not understand. Having a manufacturer on the MATC board gives our technical college the necessary knowledge base to match up its educational programming with the real world challenges of employers on the front lines of the battle to keep our region competitive in the global marketplace.”
