Air travel through Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport continued to slowly rebound in July after plummeting earlier this year, but remained well behind levels from last year.
Total passenger traffic was down 71.9% in July, an improvement from the 77.8% year-over-year decline in June and year-over-year drops of 96% and 89.3% in April and May.
Roughly 396,000 passengers have traveled through Mitchell in the last four months, including 175,765 in July. More than 625,000 passengers came through the airport in July 2019.
Southwest Airlines had the largest share of the airport's passenger traffic at 47.9%, up from 39.9% in July 2019. American Airlines was second with at 24.4%, up from 12.7% last year.
Delta and United, on the other hand, have lost market share at the airport over the last year. Delta dropped from 28.7% to 14.2% and United went from 10% to 6.3%.
Frontier and Alaska have been relatively flat with 5.3% and 1.8% market share at the airport respectively.
On average, there were 11,345 seats available per day in July across all airlines, a figure that is down 50.9% from last year.
July did mark the first time the average number of seats topped 10,000 for the first time since March. It was 8,455 in June and dipped as low as 6,651 in May.
The value of rental car receipts at Mitchell also continued to improve in July, but was still down 53.7% from last year at $21.8 million year-to-date. Receipts were down 63.8% in July, an improvement from the 67.9% drop in June and 85% and 80% declines in April and May respectively.
Avis and Hertz have lost rental share compared to the first seven months of last year while Enterprise, the leader at 27.9%, has gained. DTG Operations and Midwest Car Rental have also gained market share.
