Milwaukee Art Museum could be named ‘8th Wonder of the World’

The Milwaukee Art Museum is competing against more than 330 international destinations for a chance to be named the “8th Wonder of the World.”

The contest, organized by online travel resource virtualtourist.com, will grant the crowned “wonder” a feature segment on the entertainment news show “Extra” in front of a national audience.

Visit Milwaukee, the city’s convention and visitors’ bureau, nominated the Milwaukee Art Museum because of its “magnificence.”

“We thought our magnificent museum would be the perfect addition for Milwaukee, especially because Virtual Tourist named it the sexiest building on the planet (in 2010),” said Carrie Woods, tourism public relations specialist for Visit Milwaukee.

The “8th Wonder of the World” contest, which includes both natural and manmade destinations from across the globe, will determine its winner through a voting system. Anyone interested in voting for their favorite destination can log onto www.virtualtourist.com/8thwonder and cast one vote each day. To vote for the art museum, participants can type “Milwaukee” into the site’s search bar to find the museum among its competitors.

Voting runs through the end of September.

According to Visit Milwaukee, the art museum currently ranks in the top 150 spots in terms of votes. Both Visit Milwaukee and the art museum will continue to promote the contest through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter in hopes of racking up the most votes.

“(Winning) would raise awareness of this beautiful building that we have right on the lake here and remind people that we’re a great city to visit (and) an awesome destination to check out, not only because of the art museum but also because of the many other facets we have here,” Woods said.

Contenders include destinations like the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Calif.

The “8th Wonder of the World” will appear on “Extra” in October.
