MillerCoors buys property near downtown to expand Tenth and Blake brewery

MillerCoors LLC recently purchased the 110,000-square-foot industrial facility at 918 W. Somers St., near downtown Milwaukee, for $650,000 from Securant Bank & Trust.

The building is located next door to the Tenth Street Brewery, which is part of MillerCoors LLC’s Tenth and Blake Beer Co., which produces craft beers including Leinenkugel’s products. MillerCoors bought the Somers Street building to expand the Tenth Street Brewery operations.

“As demand for our craft and specialty beers continues to increase, this additional space gives us the ability to expand our overall brewing and packaging capacity,” said Tom Cardella, Tenth and Blake president and chief executive officer.

With a staff of 12, the Tenth Street Brewery brews a variety of beers for Chippewa Falls-based Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, including its Big Eddy Series. It brews additional beers for Tenth and Blake, whose family of breweries also includes Blue Moon Brewing Company and Crispin Cider Company.

Tenth and Blake will refurbish the two-story building, which was built in 1924, over the next several months, and expects it to be ready in early 2014.

Securant Bank & Trust recently acquired the building from Waukesha-based PPE Real Estate II LLC in a sheriff’s deed pursuant to judgement of foreclosure. The building was formerly occupied as a Sara Lee Bakery Group plant, which closed in 2005.
