The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has experienced tremendous growth under Jon Vice’s leadership. The organization has grown from one facility in downtown Milwaukee to a sprawling, state-of-the-art campus near the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, as well as a subsidiary health system that expands throughout the state. The following timeline documents the organization’s growth.
1988 – Children’s Hospital moves from downtown to the new facility near the Medical College of Wisconsin off Watertown Plank Road and 92nd Street. The new hospital had 190 patient rooms, parent sleeping accommodations, play rooms, two intensive care units, a new emergency department, an expanded hematology/transplant unit, an intermediate ICU, centralized outpatient clinics and radiology services, more operating rooms and a new auditorium for staff education and community programs.
1990 – An eighth floor is added to the hospital, and other floors are remodeled and adjusted for the changing clinic needs. The third floor is extended east to enlarge the surgery services. The hospital is expanded to 222 beds.
1992 – The second phase of the east expansion begins. Floors are added beneath and seven floors are added above the extended third floor.
1994 – A new office building, which today is the Children’s Clinics Building, is completed. A third-phase expansion also is completed, adding space on top of the emergency department/trauma center.
2006 – The Children’s Corporate Center is completed. The facility includes a 290,000-square-foot, eight-story building, a 1,600-stall parking structure and a 300-foot underground connecting tunnel to Children’s Hospital.
2007 – The Children’s Research Institute on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Campus opens. The collaborative project between the Children’s Research Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin is a $140 million biomedical and translational research facility. The 298,000-square-foot facility provides research space and two wings of laboratories.
2009 – The West Tower project is set for completion in spring of 2009. The 12-story, 425,000-square-foot facility will increase the bed numbers to 294 from its current 236, including additional room for 72 more beds in the future. The tower also will include a larger pediatric intensive care unit and an expanded Herma Heart Center. Each floor also will feature separate rooms for family privacy and to control infections.
