Medical College receives $100,000 for childhood cancer research

The Medical College of Wisconsin was among five institutions across the country to receive a $100,000 Springboard Grant from the national nonprofit organization, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

The nonprofit, headquartered in Wynnewood, Pa., which contributes fundraising dollars toward research efforts of cures for childhood cancers, distributed each grant following cutbacks in National Institutes of Health funding.

The grants support cutting-edge projects demonstrating “high impact potential” for childhood cancer research.

“With less than five percent of the Federal Government’s total funding for cancer research each year being dedicated to childhood cancers, Alex’s Lemonade Stand foundation is constantly looking for ways to keep promising research alive,” said Jay Scott, co-executive director of the nonprofit. “Through these Springboard Grants, we hope sustaining the research of these promising investigators while they reapply for large-scale funding will result in better treatments and ultimately cures for childhood cancers.”

The grant awarded to the Medical College of Wisconsin was specifically given to Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Subramaniam Malarkannan to study leukemias and lymphomas.

The other four grants were distributed to the University of California, San Diego; the University of Iowa; the University of Rochester; and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Each $100,000 grant will be rolled out over the course of one year.
