The Medical College of Wisconsin will hold an ALS symposium on Thursday and its 2014 Healthcare Dinner on Monday.
The free symposium on “Icing ALS: Patient, Clinical and Research Perspectives” will take place at MCW in Wauwatosa. It is hosted by the MCW department of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy and the Neuroscience Research Center.
The event will feature a keynote address at 4 p.m. by Dr. Teepu Siddique, an expert in the genetics and treatment of ALS from Northwestern University. Presentations by ALS patients and scientists will begin prior to the keynote at 2 p.m., and a reception will follow at 5 p.m.

On Monday, the MCW’s 2014 Healthcare Dinner hosted by the MCW’s Digestive Disease Center Board will take place at the Pfister Hotel, 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. in Milwaukee. The keynote speaker will be Bret Baier, chief political anchor on the Fox News Channel.
Baier will offer a personal perspective on the current state of health care, as the father of a son born with five congenital heart defects who has undergone multiple surgeries. Baier’s book “Special Heart: A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage, and Love” will be available at the event.
The event will also include the presentation of the Warren P. Knowles Humanitarian Award to Paul Purcell, chairman and chief executive officer and member of the board of directors of Baird Financial Group and affiliated entities, including Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. The award honors an individual or organization with a commitment to health-related issues and whose work reflects the dedication to public service and education marking the career of former Wisconsin Gov. Warren P. Knowles.
