The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a grant and an award to identify new therapeutic targets for chronic obstructive lung diseases and to study better treatments for breast cancer, respectively.
The former is a one-year, $382,500 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The co-primary investigators of the grant from MCW are Brian Volkman, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, and Dr. Mitchell Grayson, associate professor of allergy, asthma and immunology.
The latter is a three-year Mentored Career Development Award from the Clinical & Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin awarded to Dr. Carmen Bergom, Ph.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology at MCW.
The grant provides up to $140,000 per year in salary and benefits, as well as $25,000 annually to support her research. In addition to the financial support, the grant also provides mentored training opportunities for junior faculty working in clinical and translational research who want to become dedicated, independently funded researchers.
Bergom’s mentors over the next three years include Dr. Gilbert White II, professor of medicine, biochemistry and pharmacology and toxicology at MCW and the Richard H. and Sara E. Aster Professor for Medical Research at BloodCenter of Wisconsin, and Carol Williams, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and toxicology at MCW.
