Massive food drive planned for Saturday

Milwaukee will take part in a national food drive movement on Saturday as letter carriers across the country collect food donations from residents living along their routes.

The “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive,” an annual event facilitated very second Saturday of May, runs off the generosity of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

About 5,000 letter carriers will collect donations in Wisconsin. The food will support Hunger Task Force’s efforts to feed individuals and families in need throughout the summer, a season identified as high risk for hunger as children are not able to eat meals at school.

Residents who wish to donate can put non-perishable food items into a blue plastic bag they should have found in their mailbox earlier this week. Bags can be left by the mailbox for letter carriers to pick up during their delivery shifts.

“Stamp Out Hunger is one of the easiest ways to help out families in need here in Milwaukee,” Sherrie Tussler, executive director of Hunger Task Force, said in a press release. “Your letter carrier will literally do the heavy lifting and will get your donation to Hunger Task Force. We’ll deliver it to local pantries free of charge.

Locally, the food drive is sponsored by Kohl’s Cares and Milwaukee-based Rexnord.

Hunger Task Force collects food year round and also accepts online donations at www.hungertaskforce.org.
