Massive concrete pour completed for The Moderne

Crews for J.H. Findorff & Son Inc. recently completed a 19-hour mat pour of 3,750 cubic yards of concrete for the foundation of The Moderne, a 30-story residential building under construction at the southwest corner of Old World Third Street and Juneau Avenue in downtown Milwaukee.

The concrete was poured into a 7-foot thick mat slab. The concrete equates to about 7,700 tons or more than 15 million pounds of material.

It took 380 truck loads of concrete to complete the mat pour. Each truck took about three minutes to unload its concrete during the 19-hour pour.

“The success of (the mat pour) was the result of a well-planned and well executed collaborative effort on all fronts,” said Eric Wynn, general manager of Findorff. “There was an overwhelming surge of positive energy during the entire 19-hour pour. Everyone had a great sense of pride for the work that was taking place and the effect this work would have on the city. It was a great thing to be a part of.”

Once it is completed in 2012, The Moderne will be the tallest building west of the Milwaukee River in downtown Milwaukee. It will have 203 apartments, 14 condominiums and first floor retail space.
