Marquette University-New York Times partnership awarded grant from Gates Foundation

Marquette University has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Grand Challenges Explorations through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help fund a partnership between the university and the New York Times called FixesU.

FixesU will focus on communicating the importance of investments that benefit global development and will advance the university’s social justice initiatives.

“It is essential that we take a lead role in accepting the challenge of being innovative and entrepreneurial in pursuing our dreams and the aspirations of the greater community,” said Marquette University President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz. “This unique partnership offers an opportunity to live out our deep commitment to serving others and finding solutions to society’s greatest needs.”

The Marquette University-New York Times partnership received funding after an application process requiring competitors to pitch a creative idea in one of five global health and develop subjects such as agriculture development and immunization.

The Grand Challenges Explorations program has been distributing grants to anyone from any organization since 2008 and in total has awarded funds to more than 700 people in 45 countries.
