Marquette University High School awarded $1.7 million gift for scholarships

Marquette University High School has been awarded a $1.7 million gift from the estate of Harvey and Elaine Schmidt to be contributed to the Harvey and Elaine Schmidt Scholarship Fund, which offers tuition assistance to students in need.

Harvey Schmidt graduated from Marquette University High School in 1938 and attended Marquette University where he studied engineering. He worked for Tews Lime and Cement for 30 years and passed away in 2006. His wife, Ellen, grew up in Bay View and passed away in 2012.

“Receiving this generous gift from the estate of Harvey and Elaine is a big help in achieving our strategic goal of doubling the school’s scholarship endowment in order to ensure that capable students from all socioeconomic backgrounds can attend MUHS,” said the Rev. Warren Sazama, S.J., president of the high school.

The Harvey and Elaine Schmidt Scholarship Fund supports Marquette High’s annual financial aid awards, which are distributed based on need to about one-third of students. The fund, valued at $1.8, will make possible nine full-tuition scholarships each year in perpetuity.
