Marquette to raze McCormick Hall, build new residence halls

Construction to begin this year

The Marquette University Board of Trustees has approved plans for a $96 million residence hall construction project on the southwest corner of North 17th Street and West Wells Street in Milwaukee.

Once the project is completed in 2018, the university plans to demolish McCormick Hall, a 50-year-old residence hall on the corner of North 16th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue.

The building project includes plans for two co-ed residence halls connected through the ground floor by dining and campus community space. The two buildings will house a total of 750 beds. McCormick Hall currently houses 725 beds.

“For Marquette University to be among the top Catholic and Jesuit institutions in the world, it all must start with the student experience,” Marquette University president Michael Lovell said in a statement released Monday. “We have to think and act differently and embrace new ways of living and learning for our community.”

The site of the planned residence halls is currently a parking lot and the university plans to break ground on the project in late 2016. The residence halls are expected to open for the fall 2018 semester.

Plans for the residence halls call for suite-style rooms.

“This significant development will position Marquette as a leader in reimagining residence halls to better meet the needs of today’s students,” Strigens said.

The project will primarily be funded through cash reserves, funds from the university’s capital budget and debt financing.

Future plans for the McCormick Hall site have not yet been determined.
