Marquette to begin construction for new $96 million dorm

Renderings released for project, to break ground on Nov. 2

Marquette University released renderings this morning of its planned $96 million, 750-bed dormitory that will be built at West Wells Street and North 17th Street.

The dormitory will be co-ed and house freshman and sophomore students beginning in 2018. The building will have two 375-bed buildings, connected through the lower levels by a dining area and community space.

Marquette plans to break ground on the project on Nov. 2.

“For Marquette University to be among the top Catholic and Jesuit institutions in the world, it all must start with the student experience,” Marquette President Michael Lovell said in a statement. “We have to think and act differently and embrace new ways of living and learning for our community.”

Rooms in the new residence towers were described by Lora Strigens, Marquette’s vice president for planning and strategy, as pod- and suite-like rooms that are different than traditional dorm rooms.

Marquette announced plans to build the new dorm to replace the 50-year-old McCormick Hall on the corner of North 16th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue on May 2. Once the new residence hall is completed, Marquette said it will raze McCormick Hall.

Milwaukee-based architecture firm Workshop Architects and Baltimore-based design firm Design Collective were selected by Marquette in July to develop a vision for the new residence hall. Construction firm J.H. Findorff & Son, Inc., which has offices in Madison and Milwaukee, will be the construction management firm for the project.
