Manufacturer supplies bikes for employees as part of a wellness program

Milwaukee-based Badger Alloys recently presented its employees with custom fit bikes, helmets and locks to kick off its new wellness program.
“Our health is our greatest asset, and so many of us do little about it,” said Rob Cowen, president and chief executive officer of Badger Alloys. “I believe that this program will help us make simple changes in our lives that will allow us to live longer and happier.”
According to Cowen, 99 of Badger Alloys 102 employees enrolled in the program which required that each employee complete a health assessment through a third-party and then meet with the third-party about the results.
“Prior to initiating this program, only 15 percent of our employees were getting annual physicals,” Cowen said. “For a company of our size, national statistics would suggest that 7 employees are pre-diabetic and do not know it.  This program will help our employees identify the lifestyle changes that will help them live healthier and reduce their health care costs.”
Participants were able to choose between the bike, helmet and the lock or $100 in cash.
The company has also agreed to pay up to $200 a year in registration fees for athletic events like run/walks, bike rides and triathlons.
“Each and every one of us has a personal responsibility for our own health,” Cowen said.
