Manitowoc Econo Lodge owner plans to reopen downtown Sheboygan hotel

Akshay Patel, the owner of the Econo Lodge hotel in Manitowoc, plans to re-open the former Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Sheboygan.

The Sheboygan hotel property is being sold by Kohler Credit Union. Patel declined to disclose details of the sale, but the U.S. Small Business Administration recently approved a $576,000 loan guarantee for the Sheboygan hotel. The loan is being provided by Sheboygan-based Community Bank & Trust.

The 54-room Sheboygan hotel, located at 723 Center Ave., closed in 2008.

Patel plans to reopen the hotel as an Econo Lodge. He also plans to have a restaurant operator re-open the restaurant in the Sheboygan hotel building.

Patel said he has owned the Manitowoc Econo Lodge for about seven years.
