Milwaukee-based Mandel Group Inc. hopes to begin construction of the its long delayed Domus project next year, chief operating officer Robert Monnat said.
Domus is a 6-story, 155-unit apartment building that Mandel Group plans to build southwest of East Erie Avenue along the Milwaukee River in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.
The site is one of the few vacant riverfront lots in the Third Ward.
Mandel Group unveiled plans for Domus several years ago as a 61-unit condominium development. But the project was derailed when the condo market collapsed during the Great Recession. The project has been shifted to apartments to take advantage of the strong apartment market in the area.
Mandel Group’s Gaslight Lofts and Corcoran Lofts apartment developments in the Third Ward have a combined 215 units, and have been in high demand from renters, Monnat said.
“We just can’t meet all of the demand that we see for loft style living in the Third Ward,” he said.
Mandel Group plans to set aside some space in Domus for a health club for buildings and neighborhood residents, Monnat said. The building will also have a small amount of retail space.
