LifeCare Hospitals of Wisconsin in Waukesha to close

Will lay off 171 employees

Froedtert Health purchased the LifeCare Hospitals of Wisconsin building and property in Waukesha for $30.6 million.

LifeCare Hospitals of Wisconsin has notified the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development that it will close its Waukesha hospital and lay off 171 employees.

The layoffs will occur on June 23, according to the notice.

The 62-bed specialty hospital opened in 2007 and is operated by Plano, Texas-based for-profit hospital company LifeCare Health Partners. It treats medically complex and critically ill patients who require extended acute care hospitalization.

Froedtert Health purchased the 75,000-square-foot LifeCare Hospitals building at 2400 Golf Road in 2018 for $30.6 million. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin has operated its 7,800-square-foot Lake Country Surgery Center, located adjacent to the hospital, since it opened in 2016.

Froedtert Health spokesman Steve Schooff said plans for the space are being evaluated. No Froedtert jobs will be affected, he said.

Representatives with LifeCare Health Partners didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

The hospital is located northwest of I-94 and Highway T in Waukesha, near GE Healthcare’s Pewaukee facility. LifeCare purchased the land for the hospital from GE Healthcare.
