Kohl’s shifts philanthropic focus to family health with $10 million initiative

Kohl’s Corp. announced this week it will give a total of $5 million to launch new partnerships with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Those gifts, along with a recent $5 million donation to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for mental health services, are part of the Menomonee Falls-based retailer’s new focus on holistic family health and wellness, the company said.

The company’s corporate social responsibility platform has focused on children’s health in the past.

“Enriching the lives of the families we serve and creating meaningful change in the communities we are proud to be part of has always been and will remain at the core of who we are as a company,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief executive officer. “Our broadened focus on family health and wellness, particularly the introduction of our support of mental health services and new partnerships with organizations with the expertise to address critical needs, will enable us to make a difference in the everyday wellness of families including physical, mental and emotional well-being.”

Kohl’s is donating $2 million to Alliance for a Healthier Generation to launch a family health and wellness initiative, called Kohl’s Healthy at Home, which is designed to address the growing rate of childhood obesity. The national organization serves more than 45,000 schools and out-of-school programs.

Kohl’s is donating $3 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America to provide comprehensive social and emotional development training for staff and integrate emotional and social skills into program curricula.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of America is proud to partner with Kohl’s to equip youth development professionals at local Clubs nationwide with the knowledge and resources they need to build the social and emotional skills of our members through impactful programming,” said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “With Kohl’s support, we will be able to dramatically change how we approach designing curricula, trainings, and staff practices to include both social and environmental youth development and therefore offer holistic support that meets the emotional and behavioral needs of our kids and teens.”

Kohl’s announced in March it will donate $5 million to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to support mental health access, early detection, prevention, education, and awareness.
