Kohl’s Corp. reports higher holiday sales

Preliminary results show small increase

Menomonee Falls-based Kohl’s Corp. said its holiday sales improved slightly in 2015, as the company today provided an update on its fourth quarter results ahead of its official earnings report.

Kohl’s reported its fourth quarter comparable store sales were up 0.4 percent over the fourth quarter of 2014. Its full-year comparable sales were up 0.7 percent.

Revenue increased 0.8 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter and total sales were up 1 percent for the full year.

The company said online shopping provided a boost in the fourth quarter, with online-generated orders and sales each increasing about 30 percent during the quarter. Still, the total sales increase was less than executives predicted heading into the holiday season.

“While we experienced our fifth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales increases, sales were very volatile and less than planned in the fourth quarter,” said Kevin Mansell, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Kohl’s. “We experienced a very strong holiday selling season from the week of Thanksgiving through Christmas. These results were offset by a very slow start to the quarter in early November and a weaker-than-expected January as soft demand for cold-weather goods led to lower store traffic in these more discretionary shopping periods.”

Kohl’s Corp., which operates 1,165 Kohl’s department stores in 49 states, will release its full fourth quarter and full-year earnings report on Feb. 25.
