San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group says temporary layoffs at the Milwaukee hotel at 310 E. Chicago St. began in March and were at the time "expected to last a short time." However, "It now appears the length and severity of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our business are greater than previously were foreseeable," Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group general manager Patrick Gaskin said in a letter to the state. "As a result, we had to reassess our understanding of the circumstances facing the (Kimpton Journeyman) hotel." "It is now reasonably forseeable that the layoffs will last at least 6 months and if conditions do not improve thereafter, will continue indefinitely," Gaskin's letter said. "We cannot say when, or if, we will be able to reinstate employees back to work." The 158-room Kimpton Journeyman Hotel opened in 2016.
