What was the smartest thing your company did in the past year?

“Taking the initiative in construction sustainability and completing our own office interior renovation project that has been recognized as the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified Commercial Interior Project in the State of Wisconsin.”

What’s new at your company?

“Again, we have taken the initiative in construction sustainability by having 20 of our people becoming LEED accredited professionals. We are also using computer modeling in many of our projects.  The process we have developed is called VDCC (Virtual Design and Construction Coordination), and we have trademarked the process.”

Do you plan to hire any additional staff or make any significant capital investments in your company in the next year?

“Yes, we just bought the building next door to our current facility and since we have a space crunch with our growing company, we have plans to expand our office, warehouse, and shop to the adjacent property. This remodeling is currently underway.”

What will be your company’s main challenges in the next year?

“Maintaining growth in a slower growing economy.”

What’s the hottest trend in your industry?

“Building information modeling (BIM) – 3-D modeling.”

Do you have a business mantra?

“Do the right thing.”

From a business standpoint, who do you look up to?

“My father.”

What was the best advice you ever received?

“Enjoy your children, because they grow up fast.”

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you in your career?

“When our team was interviewing for the Miller Park project, we decided to take a very ‘low tech’ approach, using boards that were mostly handcrafted. For us, this presentation was less about style and more about content of message. As we were sitting in our assigned ‘on deck’ room at the Italian Community Center, we saw the other teams coming in with lots of huge black cases. They were pulling in these giant cases on wheels and carts because they were bringing in video, lighting and all sorts of AV equipment and high tech gadgets. We all looked at each other and became a bit anxious. Had we taken the right approach? Then when our name was called, at the last minute, we realized that no one had a pointer, so as we were walking in the room to make our presentation, I grabbed a Venetian blind rod closer off the window of our waiting room. We walked into our presentation kind of chuckling. After our presentation was made, we all had a big laugh over it – especially since we got the job. It was clear that we had the better message and that the client heard it, even without the use of all the AV media aids.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“Spend time with my family and fish and hunt.”
