Johnson Outdoors acquires diving technology venture

Racine-based Johnson Outdoors Inc. announced today the acquisition of SEABEAR Diving Technology, an Austrian-based dive innovation start-up that specializes in the development of underwater instrumentation.Compass

Johnson Outdoors acquired the company’s intellectual property assets and talent, according to Patricia Penman, vice present of global marketing services and communication for Johnson Outdoors. SEABEAR has about eight people.

SEABEAR will join Johnson Outdoors’ diving business unit, which makes and markets SCUBAPRO  branded dive equipment sold in more than 80 countries.

“The power and appeal of Johnson Outdoors’ iconic SCUBAPRO brand, our deep knowledge of the dive consumer, and legacy of pioneering innovation, combined with SEABEAR’s technology expertise will strengthen innovation and enhance opportunities for sustainable growth in the future,” said Helen Johnson-Leipold, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson Outdoors.

Penman said Johnson Outdoors has not yet determined if SEABEAR’s present location will remain or if it will be integrated with a Johnson Outdoors facility.

Johnson Outdoors, a leading global outdoor recreation company, has 1,200 employees at 20 global facilities, and approximately 80 employees in Wisconsin.
