Brookfield-based Hunzinger Construction Co. has been in business for 107 years. In that time, the firm has grown from a small operation to one with 43 full-time employees and nearly 200 tradespeople.
In addition to remaining viable, even growing, during an economic time when many other firms in the industry were closing, Hunzinger Construction has always remained true to its commitment and dedication to the community.
The company, from the top executives on down, values helping others in need and has consistently served more than 40 local charities, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee, Inhabit Inc., Ronald McDonald House Charities and Wounded Warrior Project. Hunzinger has also spearheaded efforts to send more than 30 tons of food, supplies and gifts to troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2006.
Hunzinger has been involved with Make-A-Wish for the past 23 years. To date, the company has granted more than 100 wishes to area families. Employees at all levels of the company take an active role in supporting the organization.
John Hunzinger, president of Hunzinger Construction, has served the organization since the 1990s and has also served as president of its board of directors.
“Once they granted their first wish they were hooked,” said Patti Gorsky, president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin.
Hunzinger recently played a pivotal role in granting Make-A-Wish Wisconsin’s 5,000th wish.
“For us it all comes down to four words, and that’s ‘do the right thing,’” said Kevin O’Toole, executive vice president of Hunzinger. “We try to instill that culture in all of the people that work with us because whether you’re running a business or a family or an extended family, or being a good citizen in the community, ‘do the right thing’ is a great way to do things.”
