HUD grants to help workforce

Wisconsin has received $720,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds are aimed at helping public and assisted housing residents obtain education, training and jobs.

Locally, Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee has received $69,000, Housing Authority of Racine County has received $66,190 and City of Kenosha Housing Authority has been awarded $67,266.

The grant recipients will have the ability to hire service coordinator employees who will target individuals in HUD-funded housing to help them find work.

“This funding ultimately links individuals to childcare, computer access, job training and other basic skills individuals need to compete for jobs that pay a living wage,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. “To continue to grow America’s economy, we must see to it that every American has the skills and resources they need to become gainfully employed.”

The funding comes from the Public Housing-Family Self Sufficiency Program and the Housing Choice Voucher-Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
