Horizon Retail Construction sells HQ site to SC Johnson

Contractor has plans to build a new office in Sturtevant

With plans in place to build a new headquarters in Sturtevant, Horizon Retail Construction Inc. has sold the property where it currently operates for $12 million to S.C. Johnson & Son Inc., according to state records.

The contractor’s offices are located 1500 Horizon Drive, Mount Pleasant, in a 62,000-square-foot building that was constructed in 2008. In January, Sturtevant officials approved Horizon’s purchase of a 4-acre, village-owned site at 9999 E. Exploration Court. There, the company is nearly finished constructing a new 40,000-square-foot office building. The $200,000 land transaction was made final in the spring, state records show.

Patrick Christensen, president of Horizon, said in a phone interview that the plan is to move staff in to the new building on Jan. 17. When all is said and done, the new headquarters will have taken about seven months to build. It features updated technology, more training and conference space, and various sustainability features, such as LED lighting.

“Our plan is to grow and add jobs in the Sturtevant community, and we built the facility to accommodate that,” Christensen said.

The site of the future Horizon headquarters is one of two parcels the village has sold in recent months. At a neighboring site, 10201 E. Exploration Court, will be a two-story office building and conference center. In 2017, The village bought both parcels from MLG/JLP 20 East Ltd. Partners. The village wanted control of how the properties were developed.

SC Johnson, for its part, has purchased a piece of land not far from existing manufacturing operations. The company’s Waxdale plant in Mount Pleasant is about a mile south of the Horizon Drive property. SC Johnson recently announced planned upgrades to that facility.

The company declined to comment on potential plans for the site.

“We can confirm that we did purchase the property at 1500 Horizon Drive. Beyond that we do not comment on business transactions,” a spokesperson wrote in an email.

The 10-acre property is assessed at about $9 million, according to Racine County property records.
