Hofbrauhaus planned at Bavarian Inn

Cincinnati-based The Bistro Group Inc. plans to open a Hofbrauhaus restaurant and beer garden in the Old Bavarian Inn building at 700 W. Lexington Blvd. in Glendale.

The project will be reviewed Tuesday by the Glendale Plan Commission.

In information submitted to the city, The Bistro Group says it plans to give the structure a “complete facelift on both the interior and exterior.” The restaurant will provide “authentic Bavarian cuisine and atmosphere” and Hofbrauhaus beer.

The new Hofbrauhaus restaurant will consist of about 24,000 square feet of space divided between a main upper level and an exposed ground level. Most of the remodeling work will be done on the upper level of the building, which will have a remodeled kitchen, main dining/beer hall, a new brewery, a new bar, a gift shop, a private dining hall/bar and storage and service rooms. The ground level will be used for storage, offices and a private banquet hall.

A multi-tiered outdoor beer garden will be added to the west side of the structure, overlooking soccer fields to the northwest. The existing detached beer garden at the property is not part of the project, but it could occasionally be serviced by the Hofbrauhaus for special events.

The restaurant will have 100 to 200 employees and will be open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., The Bistro Group says.

The Hofbrauhaus is expected to open on June 1, 2014.

The first Hofrauhaus brewpub franchise opened in 2003 in Newport, Ky. near Cincinnati. Another opened in Pittsburgh in 2009 and a third in the Chicago area early this year. A Hofbrauhaus was previously planned at the former Pabst brewery in downtown Milwaukee, but those plans fell through.

The Bavarian Complex, including soccer fields, the Bavarian Inn and Old Heidelberg Park (site of annual Oktoberfest festivities), was acquired in 2011 by The Bavarian Soccer Club from an entity of five German clubs.
