Historic Third Ward cancels Summer Sizzle jazz festival

The Historic Third Ward Jazz Festive, Summer Sizzle, has been cancelled this year due to a full schedule of summer activity in the Third Ward neighborhood.

The festival, organized annually by the Historic Third Ward Association, Inc., was slated to run Aug. 2-3. The festival’s location also plays host to the Third Ward Art Festival on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and the Harley Davidson 110th Reunion Aug. 29 – Sept. 1.

In addition to these celebrations, construction of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design student apartments will roll out along Menomonee and Erie Streets this summer. Starting in September, the St. Paul Avenue Bridge will close for reconstruction, I-794 will be redeveloped by St. Paul Avenue, and the Third Ward’s new Kimpton hotel will be under construction at the northeast corner of Broadway and East Chicago Street.

Summer Sizzle organizers felt that adding the jazz festival to the mix of events and construction would inconvenience neighborhood residents and businesses.

The Historic Third Ward Association plans to revive the jazz festival in the future when neighborhood activity simmers down.

“We’re appreciative to our long-time sponsors and many other supporters and festival goers,” said Nancy O’Keefe, executive director of the Historic Third Ward Association.
