Historic Milwaukee plans Spanish tours

Historic Milwaukee, Inc., in partnership with Marquette University, is launching a new set of tours in Spanish throughout Walker’s Point so that more area residents can learn about the city’s history.

The tours are being pieced together by Latino and Latina students under the direction of Dr. Eugenia Afinoguenova, associate professor of Spanish at Marquette.

Five free pilot tours will open the program. Tours are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m.; Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Each tour will last one to two hours and will educate participants about the history of Walker’s Point, its architecture, and its impact on Milwaukee’s Latino and Latina communities.

Tours will begin at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Church, located at 613 S. 4th St. in Milwaukee.

Historic Milwaukee and Marquette aim to continue tours in Spanish next spring and summer as well as by request.

To join one of the five pilot tours, contact Afinoguenova at 414-630-7507 or afinoguenova@mu.edu. Interested participants can also sign up at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Church.
