Harley to recall motorcycles with brake problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that nearly 20,000 motorcycles manufactured by Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Motor Co. will be recalled because of problems with the front brakes.

The recalled bikes will include the 2012 model year Dyna and Softail motorcycles manufactured between Aug. 22, 2011 and Feb. 24, 2012.

In the affected motorcycles, the threads for the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder may corrode, causing a sudden loss of brake fluid and increasing the risk of a crash.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will flush and inspect the front brake master cylinder and, if necessary, replace the master cylinder, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0163 and 0164. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
