Growing Power lands federal grant

Growing Power Inc. has been awarded a federal grant of $99,868 to help increase access of local food in local schools.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in connection with Farm to School, a USDA-supported program aimed at improving agricultural and nutritional education by providing locally-sourced food in schools.

Through the grant funding, Growing Power will be better equipped to provide training on how to produce fresh locally grown foods.

“We at Growing Power are extremely pleased to have been awarded this grant from the USDA’s Farm to School initiative,” said Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power. “Teaching kids to eat right is one of the most important things we can be doing to combat the obesity epidemic in this country. This grant helps us reach kids and get them thinking about the food they eat. Through our partnership with MPS (Milwaukee Public Schools) and Sysco, the supplier to MPS, we are able to show kids what healthy food is: not only how it looks and tastes, but how it is grown, harvested and processed.”

“Over 80 percent of Milwaukee Public School children are categorized as low-income and, as a result, may not have access to healthy food options,” said U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, who helped procure the federal grant.
