Groundbreaking Tuesday for development at North Avenue library site

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Tuesday to celebrate the start of construction for The Standard at East Library development at the site of the East Milwaukee Library at 1910 E. North Ave., on Milwaukee’s East Side.

Demolition of the old library building at the site began recently and is well underway.

The Standard at East Library project will consist of a five-story building with 99 market rate apartments, a 16,000-square-foot grey box space for the East Milwaukee Library, and a 2,400-square-foot retail space.

HSI Properties LLC is the developer for the project. The building was designed by Engberg Anderson Architects and will be built by Stevens Construction. Hammel Green & Abrahamson Inc. (HGA) was hired to design the interior of the new library space.

Financing for the $19 million project is being provided by BMO Harris Bank.

The project is expected to be complete in late 2014.
